Cover Songs of Love

Honestly, I am not a big fan of cover songs. The original songs are usually so good, it really messes with my head to hear another version.

Sometimes an old song that has been out of play for decades, can have new life in a cover song. I heard James Mercer’s cover of The Beatles, “Here There and Everywhere” on Sirius XMU, and I melted in the beauty and the passion he added to the original masterpiece. Unfortunately, I can’t share it due to XMU claiming all the rights to it, and blocking it from being shareable. So, I did the unthinkable, I started researching beautiful covers of heart pounding love songs that I cherish. When I first heard them, I was intrigued, but as I played them a second, third and fourth time, I am in love with these amazingly beautiful cover versions.

Here You go.

Put in your earbuds and listen to each breathtaking love song and tell me what you think. Do they pass the mustard?

Kevin Morby-No Place To Fall (original by Townes Van Zandt)

“If I had no place to fall
But I needed to
Could I count on you
To lay me down?

I ain’t tellin’ you no lies
I don’t believe it’s wise
You got pretty eyes
Won’t you spin me ’round

I ain’t much of a lover it’s true
I’m here then I’m gone
And I’m forever blue
But I’m sure wanting you

Skies made of silver and gold
I’m tryin’ to hide the sun
But it can’t be done
Least not for long

But if we helped each other grow
Then the light of day
Would smile down our way
And we can’t go wrong

But time, she’s a fast old train
She’s here then she’s gone
And she won’t come again
Won’t you take my hand

If I had no place to fall
But I needed to
Could I count on you
To lay me down?”

Okay, on this one…wait for it.

The surprising reggae beat makes this cover so damn good. From the squeaky clean Carpenters to the edgy reggae of the daughter of Sex Pistols drummer, Paul Cook. Equally talented is her mom, Jeni, who was a backup singer for Culture Club and yep, Boy George is her Godfather. Give it a listen.

Hollie Cook-Superstar (Carpenters cover)

“Long ago and oh so far away
I fell in love with you before the second show
Your guitar, it sounds so sweet and clear
But you’re not really here
It’s just the radio

Don’t you remember you told me you loved me baby
You said you’d be coming back this way again baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby, I love you I really do

Loneliness is such a sad affair
And I can hardly wait to be with you again

What to say to make you come again
Come back to me again
And play your sad guitar

Don’t you remember you told me you loved me baby
You said you’d be coming back this way again baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby, oh, baby, I love you I really do”

Hold up!

Here’s an amazing vocalist with an unconventional persona. Have you caught his performances on You Tube or the latest hit TV talent show? If you can’t handle the oddness of the visual, close your eyes and listen to his, in your face, master of emotional vocals.

Love!

Puddles Pity Party-I Want You To Want Me ( Cheap trick cover)

“I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
I’d love you to love me.
I’m beggin’ you to beg me.
Shine up my old brown shoes.
Put on a brand new shirt
Get home early from work
If you say that you love me.
Oh didn’t I, didn’t I,
See you cryin’.
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I,
See you cry
Feelin’ all alone without a friend
You know you feel like dyin’.
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I,
See you cry.
I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
I’d love you to love me.
I’m beggin’ you to beg me.
Shine up my old brown shoes.
Put on a brand new shirt
Get home early from work
If you say that you love me.
Oh didn’t I, didn’t I,
See you cryin’.
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I,
See you cry
Feelin’ all alone without a friend
You know you feel like dyin’.
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I,
See you cry.
I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
I’d love you to love me.
I’m beggin’ you to beg me.”

I am a fan of most of the stripped down acoustic versions of songs. Because with each, there is no mistaking the need for stellar vocals and instrumental work. This version features only a guitar and a tambourine combined with incredible vocal artistry.

Melt with me.

James Bay-If I Ain’t Got You (Alicia Keys cover)

 ________
“Some people live for the fortune
Some people live just for the fame
Some people live for the power
Some people live just to play the game
Some people think that the physical things define what’s within
And I’ve been there before, and that life’s a bore
So full of the superficial
Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you, oh
Some people search for a fountain
That promises forever young
Some people need three dozen roses
And that’s the only way to prove you love them
Hand me the world on a silver platter
And what good would it be
With no one to share, with no one who truly cares for me
Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you
Some people want it all
But I don’t want nothing at all
If it ain’t you baby
If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you, oh
If I ain’t got you with me baby
So nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing
If I ain’t got you with me oh”

Feel free to chime in your thoughts in the comment section. I would love to hear them. Please send me a cover of a song you love too. I am wide open now, despite my aversion from covers in the past.
Thanks for listening.
