5. boygenius – boygenius
Boygenius is a dream team collaboration of three of my favorite emotional singer/songwriters, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. They formed an indie sisterhood, magically supporting each other’s songs and adding their own personal flair. If you haven’t listened to their solo projects, you should right now. Julien Baker’s Turn Out The Lights, Phoebe Bridgers’ Stranger In The Alps, and Lucy Dacus’, Historian are all works of art in their own right, but to collaborate and collectively bring their talents together with no ego is simply genius. Baker’s vocals are transcendent and can easily hit notes that might shatter windows nearby, while tugging at your heart through her emo-punk style. Bridgers possesses the ability to quietly present her robust lyrics in a folk rock/ pop tradition with an intimate personal approach. While Dacus uses her guitar fuzz to offer introspective stories dealing with personal self worth, broken love, and grief. The combination of these three skillful story tellers in song, provides so much depth and talent. Filled with masterful melodies and harmonies, this album is perfection…but at only six songs, it left me wishing for more.
