Mood Monday-Billie Marten-Milk And Honey

Sometimes, I am wowed by a songwriter and their incredible sound. Today’s song, “Milk and Honey” connects with me so completely. This songstress, Billie Marten, impresses me from her first thoughtful, breathy lyric, to the unforgettable chorus, scratchy guitar chord changes, and subtle background of horns.

It is pouring rain here in Atlanta and I am in a funky Monday mood. This song fills my brain with clouds of understanding.

I wonder if it is just me that soaks in the message of taking more and more and not giving back or realizing the impact. The challenge occurs when there is a lack of communication, causing crazy assumptions to take over and frustration begins to grow deep roots. She has a lovely grasp of it all and interprets these thoughts with such musical clarity.

Billie Marten is new to me, but this song is just one of many incredible songs she has tossed out into the world at only 16. Fortunately, her songs have crossed the ocean to find me, and I can’t stop myself from listening….

Billie Marten-Milk And Honey

“Honey here we are
Dreaming in the dark, trouble seems so far
Their thoughts were ours
But now we dream apart, now we dream apart
Oil and water

But I’m just content with time well spent
Savor the taste of sugar

But all you want is milk, more than you can drink
All you want is honey, you can’t take the sting
You live for overkill but you’re ungrateful still
All you want is honey, well honey I tried
You just want more and now it’s all gone

Honey you’re so kind
Oh we follow flight, you shook me up inside
You pick up every rumours in sight
But all the roses died, I’d rather keep them alive
Roots grow slowly

But I’d be content with time well spent
Savor the taste of sugar

But all you want is milk, more than you can drink
All you want is honey, you can’t take the sting
You live for overkill, but you’re ungrateful still
All you want is honey, well honey I tried
You just want more, you just want more

Honey I tried to make it work
You’re unsatisfied, you make it worse
Honey I’d die

Still all you want is milk, more than you can drink
All you want is honey, you can’t take the sting
You live for overkill but you’re ungrateful still
All you want is honey, well honey I tried
You just want more
You just want more
You just want more
And now it’s all gone”

Isabella Sophie Tweddle (aka Billie Marten), is a Yorkshire native. She began playing guitar at age seven or eight and had her own You Tube channel at nine. No, she wasn’t hoping to be “found”. Her mother would post them to share with her grandparents.  Her natural talent was undeniable, and the followers began to multiply. In an interview with Teen Vogue she talks about her inspiration and style,

“I listened to a lot of Nick Drake, and between his descriptions and life situations, I found his music amazing. But I love writing and I’m very honest in that aspect. If I have a subject in mind, then it’s got to be really truthful and have meaning for me to sing it.”

Wise beyond her young years, her lyrics speak truths. After a couple of impressive EPs, she has a debut album due to be released this fall. I am hoping she will drop more music as the months pass.

So stay tuned, she is definitely one worthy of your full attention.
