Charming and worthy of your ears, Anna Burch from Detroit, Michigan just released her debut solo album, Quit the Curse via Polyvinyl Records. Her tune, “Tea-Soaked Letter”has the sing-song happy melody of a cruise in your car on a lazy sunny Sunday, but surprisingly it is filled with lyrical relationship struggles and plenty of umph. It is a nice contrast that plays well.

Anna Burch-Tea-Soaked Letter
Strange the ones you love
Could bury your body underground
I woke up too late again
Would you start the coffee my only friend
I forgot to fake
The way that I was feeling
I guess it’s too late
Now all my cards are showing
Brew
No you can’t come up
Who am I kidding I would drag you up
What was that you said
That I don’t exist inside your head
You said you would communicate better
So what will you send me a tea soaked letter
Mmmmmm
I feel so alone
When everyone in town is overblown
So I made a scene
I can think of things more embarrassing
I forgot to fake
The way that I was feeling
I guess it’s too late
Now all my cards are showing
You said you would communicate better
So what will you send me a tea soaked letter
You’re all I wanted
You’re all I wanted
You’re all I wanted
You’re all I wanted
With a voice that has the range of another favorite of mine (Molly Rankin of Alvvays) Anna Burch adds self-awareness and a frankness within her music that we can all relate to. In a time in my life where I find myself a bit emotionally spent, her tunes provide an indie folk-pop salve to my heart. Anna Burchserves up a dreamy, shiny sound amidst real substance. With my headphones on, I can drift happily into her music and patiently wait for whatever presents itself next, simply because her entire album is good, really really good.
