With matters of the heart, one can expect heartache…
All of my favorite songs released this week seem to be in that category. I have fallen hard for them all. Listen.
Bear’s Den-Fuel on Fire
“I can’t find you
I wouldn’t even know where to look
Said to meet you back here, someday
Things change
Was it all in my mind?
Was I lost in my own head?
Worried about something I regret
Is there anything I don’t regret?
It’s not just the memory of you
It’s all that comes with you
As the images start to stutter and skip
Disintegrating into sparks that glitch
There’s a daemon in the server
And history’s we cannot erase
You’re so close and so far away
You’re so close now
Fuel on the fire, I can’t get enough
Fuel on the fire, now I’m burning up
Fuel on the fire, I won’t ever stop
Fuel on the fire, remembering how to love
Remembering how to love
Remembering how to love
I can’t help it
I only wish that I could
Always hoped you’d come back here someday
Things change
Was it all in my mind?
Was I lost in my own head
Worrying about something I should have said
You’re the only thing I won’t regret
Fuel on the fire, I can’t get enough
Fuel on the fire, now I’m burning up
Fuel on the fire, I won’t let it stop
Fuel on the fire, remembering how to love
Fuel on the fire, I can’t get enough
Fuel on the fire, now I’m burning up
Fuel on the fire, I won’t let it stop
Fuel on the fire, remembering how to love”
“Fuel on the Fire” is a soul searching piece of music beginning with the very first notes. Building in intensity, it features an expansive orchestral background paired with an intimate confession of thoughtful questioning. Bear’s Den creates a combustion of burning thoughts. Perhaps it is a relationship that is ending, or one that is in trouble. The hazy vagueness makes it even more personal. Despite the melancholy, he recognizes there is no regret because it all reminded him how to love. Sigh….
Bear’s Den is an alt-country, folk rock band cranking out thoughtful tunes, poetic yet powerful and beautifully instrumental. They lean in the vein of Mumford and Sons and The Avett Brothers, but after multiple award nominations for their incredible debut album, Islands, and their last stunner in 2016, Red Earth & Pouring Rain, they stand alone as an outstanding band. With a new album ‘So that you might hear me’ and it’s release on April 26th via Communion Records, there is so much to be joyous about!
And The Kids
It is refreshing when songwriters can tell it like it is…no fluff or flowery words just songs with bitter truth. A little defiant, And The Kids, jumps on the scene with a refreshing punk style, yet utterly lovable. No ranting or screaming, just genuine sugary guitar driven tunes which can not be pegged. Stream of consciousness? Perhaps, but they strike an odd chord and it makes me absolutely giddy! And The Kids are set to release their third full-length album, When This Life is Over, on Feb. 22 via Signature Sounds. Defying loneliness in their latest release, “Butterfingers”.
“I might be alone ever after
That’s why I sing loud hoping we can drown it out”
yeah right, that’s fake from the bag
yeah fine, mistakes from the inside
Butterfingers”

Foxygen

Foxygen has released a new single, “Livin’ a Lie”, ahead of their next album Seeing Other People, due April 26, via Jagjaguwar. The indie-rock duo classify their self-produced album as “Sad-Boy Plastic-Soul Adult-Contemporary Cartoon-Noir Music”. I am thrilled because I really thought they were no longer. The video is stunning because it was filmed in their neighborhood devastated by the Woolsey wildfires. The song is a brooding one amongst devastating scenery.

SOAK
Bridie Monds-Watson is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter. She goes by SOAK, a phonetic blend of “Soul” and “Folk”. SOAK’s music has been described as ‘a vivid portrait of teenage deep-thinking’ by The Guardian. I have shared her curious music before, and I am excited for her new album, Grim Town, out on April 26th via Rough Trade Records. Her latest release “Valentine Shmalentine” gives in to Hallmark and also adds a dramatic, brutally honest expression of love. It begins with tweeting birds. Yep, Disney-esque tweeting birds. She plays a simple guitar, adds dreamlike xylophone pings, and then her magical voice enters. Listen…

“Purchasing flowers outside of the local bar
Such a romantic pound for moulded plastic
Fumbling nails itch a label by accident
Your knees naked, the table
I need you
I just do
What purpose was I?
If not the apple of your eye?
In an endless scroll, red heart shapes speed by
If a good deed doesn’t earn a post on the internet
Is it selflessly meant?
Help I’m scared
I’m lost in some nothingness
And I can’t find where the exit is
I need you
I just do
I just do
I just do
I just do
I just do
I just do
I just do
I just do
I need you
I just do“
